Walhalla is a quaint town situated in the Blue Ridge Mountains foothills just west of Greenville. With a charming downtown, historic homes, and convenient lake access, Walhalla is a wonderful place to visit and call home.

Walhalla hosts stunning historic houses, churches, and shops, all situated along beautiful tree-lined streets. With Lake Keowee and the expansive Nantahala National Forest nearby, there are plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation within reach. The area is dotted with sparkling waterfalls, including Yellow Branch Falls, Isaqueena Falls, and Station Cove Falls, all of which are located just up the road from Walhalla. Highway 28 South runs through town, which provides convenient access to larger cities such as Greenville and Anderson, which are approximately 46 and 38 miles away, respectively.


Nearby Schools and Higher Education

Walhalla is served by the School District of Oconee County, which operates 10 elementary schools, three middle schools, three high schools, and three specialized schools. A few of the schools are located in Walhalla, including Walhalla Elementary School, Walhalla Middle School, and Walhalla School. Walhalla has a handful of private school options as well, such as Faith Christian School. While there are no institutions of higher learning in Walhalla, residents may easily access Clemson University, which is approximately 15 miles away in Clemson.



Walhalla was originally a settlement of German immigrants who left Hamburg, Germany and Bavaria. They first arrived in Charleston and were still in search of a place they could call home. A group of men, including General John A. Wagener, Claus Bullwinkel, John C. Henckel, Jacob Schroder, and Christopher F. Seeba, purchased 17,859 acres of land for $27,000 from Reverend Joseph Grisham of West Union. There are plenty of buildings in Walhalla listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Ellicott Rock, Keil Farm, Oconee Station and Richards House, St. John's Lutheran Church, Stumphouse Tunnel Complex, and Walhalla Graded School.
